Practice founder

Aimee Barr, LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker with more than 20 years of clinical experience. Before starting a private practice in 2012, she was fortunate to have gained great experience through her work at Bellevue Hospital and Morristown Memorial Hospital, as well as housing corporations, employee assistance programs, Fortune 500 companies, schools, outpatient clinics, and other social service settings.

Aimee values life-long learning and, in addition to her clinical background, she is also an astrologer and will utilize psychological astrology in counseling sessions when appropriate. She believes that our hardest times can also bring us a wealth of knowledge, wisdom, and strength that we didn’t know we were capable of. With the right support, she has seen many individuals become stronger and find fulfillment—even in those really rough stages of life. Aimee doesn’t just believe in helping clients overcome hurdles, she also supports them in building what is next for them. Through balancing compassionate listening with feedback, Aimee is direct in her approach and supports clients in finding the places in their world that they are meant to grow and contribute to.

Aimee has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Sociology from The University of Delaware and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Fordham University. Additionally, she has completed advanced training at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP), Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) at Ackerman Institute for the Family, and has extensive training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Therapy, and Mindfulness.

She has spent many years as a sexual assault response team volunteer and was previously a  board member of ARISE foundation, a charity based in New York City and London. It is founded on the belief that more should be done to support grass-roots anti-slavery networks.

When Aimee is not seeing clients, she loves studying astrology and also works on employing mindfulness and self-acceptance in her own everyday life. She has spoken at The Harvard Club, Fordham University, Columbia University, and the National Association of Social Workers and has been featured in The Huffington Post, Well + Good, Monster and Greatist.
